The local council, 4739, was chartered on 20th of February 1959. The original name was the Mary & Peter Council, upon the death of the original Chaplain, Father Paul Kunkel, and the name was changed to the Father Paul Kunkel Council. The local council is presided over by elected officers, lead by the Grand Knight. The original Grand Knight of Council 4739 was Robert Cox. The thirty-sixth and present Grand Knight is Richard Hughes.

Council 4739 usually meet on the second and fourth Monday of the month. During the months of May, June, July, August, November & December there is only one meeting. All meetings start at 7:15 with saying the Rosary in the Church (if available), the meeting follows in room 208. An attempt is made to hold the summer (June, July, & August) meetings at a park or a Knights home, these meeting are open to all families of the parish. Three Sundays of the year the Knights have a Mass offered for their Living and Deceased members. These are on three of the four fifth weekends. Once at the 5:00 P.M. Mass on Saturday, the others are at the 8:00 and 10:45 A.M. Mass on Sunday. Additionally the Knights have Masses said when a member dies, or a member of the family of a member dies.

·        International (Supreme) & Illinois State Information

 

The Knights of Columbus are a Catholic Men’s Fraternal Brotherhood Organization. The Knights of Columbus were started by Father Michael J. McGivney at Saint Mary Parish, New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. The Knights Supreme Office is still located in New Haven.

 

The Knights of Columbus are open to only men that are eighteen years of age and older, and are in communion with the Catholic Church.

 

The Knights work on programs in five main areas: Church, Community, Council, Family, & Youth.

 

Internationally the Knights are governed by a Board of Directors and a Supreme Knight, who presently is Carl A. Anderson. There are fifteen (15) states, the Philippines, Mexico, and Canada represented on the Board of Directors. One of which is Logan T. Ludwig from Bollingbrook, Illinois.

 

On the state level, the present State Deputy is Philip J. Barone from West Chicago. The state is divided into ninety (90) districts, each with a District Deputy. Each District Deputy has four to six local councils. The present District Deputy for Council 4739 is Thomas R. Washington from Loves Park.
